The Bold Choice: Navigating Fear and Embracing Intuition

Hello Reader !

I've been thinking about the difference between making decisions out of fear and decisions out of bold intuition. There is a HUGE difference! I find myself at that crossroads -- AGAIN...

The truth is, we all stand at this crossroads at times, facing weighty and potentially life-altering decisions. In these moments, a powerful internal dialogue often begins. Is that knot in your stomach a warning sign, a signal to retreat? Or is it the nervous flutter of excitement, the echo of your inner wisdom urging you forward?

This week, I want to delve into the crucial distinction between fear that paralyzes and intuition that guides. Learning to differentiate between these two powerful forces can be the key to making bold decisions that lead to growth and fulfillment, rather than stagnation and regret.

The Voice of Fear: The Braking System

Fear, in its healthy form, is a vital survival mechanism. It alerts us to genuine danger. However, often, the "fear" we experience when contemplating a new path isn't about physical safety. Instead, it can manifest as:

Doubt and Self-Criticism through thoughts like, "I'm not good enough," "I'll probably fail," "What will people think?"

Resistance to Change that keeps us in our comfort zones, even if unfulfilling, which can feel safer than the unknown. Fear whispers, "Stay where it's predictable."

Past Traumas and Conditioned Responses give weight to our previous negative experiences and sometimes create a fear of repeating those outcomes, even if entirely different circumstances.

How to Recognize Fear: The Fear Loop

😣It often feels heavy, restrictive, and draining.

😶It's usually rooted in "what ifs" that are negative and focused on potential loss or failure.

It tends to be logical (or at least feels logical in the moment), often based on external validation or perceived limitations and is often centered on people and others being the problem. Fear is behavior-focused, and the drive is either a reward or a punishment.

The Whisper of Intuition: The Internal Compass

Intuition, on the other hand, is often described as a "knowing" without conscious reasoning. It's that gut feeling, that quiet inner voice that nudges you in a certain direction.

Characteristics of Intuition:

❤️‍🔥It often feels light, expansive, and energizing, even if accompanied by some nervousness.

🪴It's usually focused on potential growth, learning, and alignment with your values.

💪🏻It can feel illogical or difficult to explain rationally. It's a deep sense of rightness.

Tuning into Your Intuition:

Create Stillness: Silence the external noise through meditation, nature walks, or quiet reflection.

Pay Attention to Physical Sensations: Notice where you feel things in your body. Intuition might manifest as a warmth in your chest or a feeling of lightness.

Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings without judgment can help you identify intuitive nudges.

Ask Yourself: "What feels truly aligned with who I am and what I want to create?"

Making Bold Decisions: Discerning the Difference

The key to bold decision-making lies in learning to discern whether the internal resistance you're feeling is fear holding you back or intuition guiding you elsewhere.

Think of it like this: your internal landscape is constantly sending you signals. Some are loud and urgent, like the alarm bells of fear. Others are quieter, more subtle whispers from your intuition. Bold decision-making requires you to become a skilled interpreter of these signals.

When faced with a significant choice that pushes you outside your comfort zone, it's natural to feel resistance. This resistance can manifest in various ways: anxiety, procrastination, self-doubt, or even physical discomfort. The critical step is to investigate the source of this resistance.

Ask Yourself These Questions:

  1. What is the root of this feeling? Is it based on past negative experiences or a genuine assessment of present danger?
  2. What is the potential outcome I truly desire? Does this decision move me closer to that outcome, even if it feels a little scary?
  3. If I had no fear, what would I choose? This can help you cut through the noise of anxiety.
  4. Does this feel expansive or restrictive? Fear tends to close you off, while intuition often opens up possibilities.

Making bold decisions isn't about being fearless; it's about acknowledging fear but not letting it dictate your path. It's about learning to listen to the quieter, wiser voice within that gently guides you toward your potential.

This week, I encourage you to reflect on a decision you're currently facing. Take a moment to sit with the feelings it evokes. Is it the grip of fear, or the gentle nudge of your intuition?

Wishing you a week filled with clarity and BOLD, courageous choices.

Trading Fear for Purpose: My Haiti Wake-Up Call

For years, my life felt… comfortable. Predictable. Like a well-worn armchair. Fear was a favorite blanket. "Don't rock the boat," it would purr. "You're safe here." It had a point. I had a good job, lovely friends, and knew what to expect from myself and others.

But there was this other feeling, a quiet hum beneath the surface. It whispered things like, "There's more out there," or "What about that dream to see other places?" I'd usually crank up the volume on Fear's "Stay Safe" lullaby.

The real tug-of-war started when I heard about a mission trip to help at a children's hospital in Haiti in 2009. Fear went ballistic. "You can't just leave your 2-year-old son!" it shrieked. "You don't speak Creole! What if something bad happens?" My brain conjured vivid images of dangerous mishaps and awkward language barriers.

Then that quiet hum chimed in. Not with logic, but with a feeling. A pull. Every time I looked at an info flier I had, a little spark of excitement flickered in my chest, a sense of… rightness. Like this was something my soul was leaning towards.

I almost talked myself out of it a dozen times. Fear painted vivid pictures of my family worrying, my routine disrupted, the sheer unknown of it all. I was practically drafting my "something came up" email after I committed to the trip, when that inner voice spoke again. Not with a detailed plan, just a clear sense of "this feels important."

So, despite the internal chorus of "are you insane?", I committed to the trip. And wow. That trip to Haiti was… transformative. Yes, there were language stumbles and moments of being outside my comfort zone. But there was also the profound joy of working alongside incredible people, the breathtaking beauty of the country, and a sense of purpose I hadn't felt before. I had no idea that trip would change the literal trajectory of my life, but it did -- and I am forever grateful for it.

Fear had painted a picture of danger and discomfort, and some of that was real. But intuition had pointed me towards growth and connection, and that was even more real.

That trip taught me the difference. Fear feels like a tightening, a shrinking of possibilities. Intuition feels like an opening, a gentle but firm nudge towards something that resonates with your core.

I came back from Haiti an entirely different person with different goals and plans for my life. It is the basis of how I look at material possessions and why I want to help others. It became a pivot point for me in the first iteration of peeling back trauma and learning to trust myself. It has been many years since that trip, but it is the point where I remember first standing up for myself and taking a bold step despite my fear and that of those around me.

Now, when I face a decision that makes my stomach do a little flip, I try to discern: Is this the clutching hand of "don't change," or the open palm of "explore this"?

That mission trip wasn't about selling anything, or even doing some kind of big faith work; it was about stepping into a bigger version of myself. And it all started with learning to listen to that quieter, wiser voice. It was the beginning of something bigger than myself, and it changed my life -- bringing me to greater awareness and trust of myself today.

What's a time you felt that kind of pull, even when fear was yelling?

Bold Challenge Questions:

Think of a decision you've been putting off. What feelings arise when you consider taking action? Can you identify if those feelings are rooted in specific fears or a more general sense of unease/misalignment?

Recall a time you made a "leap of faith" that felt right, even if it was scary. Looking back, how did the feeling of that intuitive pull differ from the feeling of your fears?

What's one "comfortable" aspect of your life that might actually be holding you back from something more fulfilling? What whispers of intuition have you been ignoring in that area?

Imagine you had absolutely no fear of failure or judgment. What bold step would you take in your life right now? Does that resonate with any intuitive nudges you've been feeling?
