Let's dive deep into a topic that’s always on my mind as a Bold Living Coach: the difference between living boldly and living unwisely. We’ll also explore how these choices profoundly affect our self-worth. Bold Living vs. Unwise Living: What’s the Difference? Calculated Risks vs. Impulsive Decisions First and foremost, let’s clarify the difference. Bold living involves taking calculated risks. This means you weigh your decisions carefully, fully aware of the potential consequences. On the other hand, living unwisely consists of making impulsive decisions without much thought about outcomes. “Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.” - Warren Buffett Embracing Challenges vs. Ignoring Consequences When we live boldly, we’re stepping outside our comfort zone and embracing new challenges. It’s about recognizing the risks but still moving forward with caution and courage. Living unwisely, however, means ignoring potential consequences and acting on pure impulse. I have lived both of these. I am sure you have, too. I am currently living boldly in many of my decisions as I navigate this liminal space I find myself, which I talked about last week. Responsibility vs. Recklessness Bold living is about taking responsibility for our choices and their outcomes, whether good or bad. When we live boldly, we own our decisions and their repercussions. Conversely, unwise living often involves taking unnecessary risks and engaging in harmful behaviors without accepting the aftermath. Self-Control vs. Lack of Discipline Living boldly requires self-discipline and control. It’s about staying true to your values and goals, despite temptations. Living unwisely, on the other hand, reveals a lack of self-control and an inclination towards impulsiveness. “Boldness be my friend.” - William Shakespeare The Profound Effects on Self-Worth Now that we’ve established the differences, let’s discuss how these choices affect our self-worth. Boosting Self-Esteem Living boldly boosts our self-esteem. By setting and achieving ambitious goals, we gain a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. This builds our confidence and helps us believe in our abilities. Eroding Self-Confidence Unwise living, however, can be detrimental to our self-esteem. Poor decisions often lead to negative outcomes, perpetuating a cycle of insecurity and self-doubt. Over time, this can significantly erode our self-confidence. Developing a Sense of Purpose Bold living aligns us with a sense of purpose. When we take calculated risks to achieve our goals, we find deeper meaning in our actions and lives. This sense of purpose motivates us to pursue things we may have previously deemed impossible. Experiencing Shame and Guilt Living unwisely can lead to feelings of shame and guilt. Mistakes made out of impulsiveness often result in self-blame, damaging our self-worth. This can hinder our personal growth and limit our potential. “It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” - J.K. Rowling How to Live Boldly: Tips and Challenges As a bold living coach, my mission is to help you live authentically, boldly, and out loud. Here are some practical tips to start living more boldly right now:
Dream big and create a vision for yourself. Ambitious goals push us to step outside our comfort zones and challenge our limits.
Try new things and face your fears. Whether it’s wearing a bold new lipstick color or taking on a new activity, stepping outside your comfort zone is essential for bold living.
Recognize and weigh the pros and cons before taking risks. Understand that failure is part of the journey and use it as a learning opportunity.
Failures are inevitable. Embrace them, learn from them, and use them to grow stronger. Perseverance is key to bold living.
Express yourself honestly and remain true to your values. Authenticity is at the heart of bold living. “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Travel, meet new people, and be open to different ways of thinking. New experiences enrich our lives and broaden our perspectives.
Believe in your potential to learn and grow. Stay open to new opportunities and challenges, and understand that growth often requires rest and reflection. Bold Living Challenge I challenge you to pick one of these tips and apply it to your life this week. Whether it’s setting an ambitious goal, trying something new, or embracing a failure, take a step towards living boldly.
